How the Internet Works:
Instead of the usual text, I decided to make a brief animated video of how the internet works. It doesn’t delve into SEO or anything too specific, but it’s a concise and hopefully easily-digestible overview for those that are interested! Check it out and let me know what you think!
I know that there’s a lot more that goes into it, but drop me a line in the comments and tell me what you’d like explained and I’ll see if I can drum up another animated video for you.
Thanks for watching!
Video Transcript:
So, there you are, at your desk, in front of your computer, and you need a little help. You need to access what we call ‘the internet.’ Now the internet is essentially just a series of interconnected computers, but how you access those computers is what this short video is all about. Now, it’s also important to note that a website – your website, my website, any website, is just a list of files stored on a computer somewhere called ‘hosts.’ So, if you think about it, this makes sense because these big computers host, or ‘hold onto’ your files until an internet search requests them. Now, about that search. Let’s just say that you type a web address into your web browser. That address is sent as a request to other computers on the internet. You’re essentially asking to access specific files stored at the place that the name of the web address you entered indicates. First, the information is sent to your internet service provider, also known as your ISP. This is whoever provides you internet access: Cox, Verizon, and so forth. Then, that ISP puts the request out to other computers, then other computers to see if they know where those files are stored. If this takes too long, you’ll get a timeout error, meaning that no one could find those files. If, however, your query was successful, you’ll be brought to the internet address of your choice, thanks to the series of requests and answers handled by your ISP and host computers. This is a very brief overview of how the internet works, and I hope you enjoyed it!
